Use this resource page to learn more about what we are doing in Ethiopia, and how you can help us meet spiritual and physical hungers …
Ethiopia has a 3,000-year history that includes the discovery of coffee, has more than 80 spoken languages, and has a scintillating variety of scenery and climate. All three major religions converged early in Ethiopia's history. The king of Axum, a contemporary of Constantine, converted to Christianity in the first half of the fourth century, and built a faith in the land capable of withstanding the onslaught of Islam during the seventh century, when the first Muslims arrived, still within the lifetime of Muhammad. The country remains an island of Christian influence amid a sea of Islam.
In recent years, Ethiopia has become synonymous with hunger, famine and strife. Famines have wracked this beautiful land and were especially devastating during the mid-1980s and the Communist years from 1974 to 1990, during which worldwide relief efforts were frustrated by political strongmen. Ethiopia's poverty-stricken economy is based on agriculture making the country vulnerable to natural disasters. |

Child Development Programs
Problem: There are three major problems in the target population: 1) lack of clean water and proper sanitation; 2) high illiteracy rates/very low school enrollment rate of children and poor health and education infrastructure; and 3) underdevelopment of community's organizational capacity and leadership.
Solution:
Provide assistance in the area of primary education, water and sanitation and capacity building. |
Target children to develop physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. |
Train leaders who solve problems in their respective communities and encourage citizens who reach out to serve others. |
Build the capacity of the local community to plan, implement and manage community-based development. |

Food Security and Economic Development Program
Problem: Areas of the country experience chronic food shortages. They are regular victims of drought.
Solution: An extensive, three-year integrated food security and economic development program will include components in irrigation, nutrition, natural resource management, education, water and sanitation, community health. The program will run from 2005 to 2007. |
HIV/AIDS Project
Problem: Ethiopia is among the severely affected countries with the third-greatest number of infected individuals in the world.
Solution: A three-year program will benefit 10,000 people by:
Educating people about sexuality from a biblical perspective, focusing on faithfulness and abstinence. |
Conducting regular orientation workshops and consultation meetings. |
Fighting discrimination and the stigma of those who have the disease. |
Partnering with other relief efforts to provide more medical support and outreach. |
Church Development Program
Problem: Leaders in the local churches have little training on reaching out to their communities; many of these communities have previously not been open to the gospel.
Solution: Trainings will be conducted to church leaders on how to go about reaching out to their neighborhoods spiritually, socially, and meeting physical needs. |
