Use this resource page to learn more about what we are doing in Mozambique, and how you can help us meet spiritual and physical hungers …

Mozambique is located on the southeastern coast of Africa and has substantial mineral resources. Most people live along the Zambezi River and in the Angonia Highlands. Almost five centuries as a Portuguese colony came to a close with Mozambique gaining independence in 1975. It then became a Communist government, and civil war broke out.

By 1990, 900,000 people had been killed and 1.3 million had fled the country. A peace treaty ended the civil war in 1992. Heavy flooding in 1999 and 2000 severely hurt the economy, but political stability has encouraged recent foreign investment, and Mozambique has the fastest-growing economy in Africa. Even so, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is in effect, the average life expectancy is only 31 years and 70 percent of the people live below the poverty level.

Food for the Hungry first began serving Mozambique with relief assistance in 1978 and now runs long-term development programs.
