Global Food Crisis

The “silent tsunami” of the world food crisis threatens millions of vulnerable children and families in poor communities on every continent

The combination of rising fuel and food prices, lower than normal food production and the increasing demand for grain by the bio-fuel industry, has resulted in food shortages around the globe, and it is the poor who are suffering the most.

In many countries where Food for the Hungry currently works, food insecurity is growing rapidly and many households are unable to feed their families. Our staff, already working in many of the countries impacted by this crisis, has walked alongside community leaders, churches, and families in order to determine the people and places most affected and our response to help those in need.

Food for the Hungry’s response to this crisis includes:

  1. Reaching the poor and hungry in small towns and peri-urban areas, where the need is greatest. Food for the Hungry is utilizing our successful voucher system, which empowers families to obtain sufficient and nutritious food from local markets and survive this crisis. Because our staff has their “boots on the ground” and know these communities well, these vouchers are the quickest and most effective way of reaching the most people.
  1. Shipping dried food packets from the states to the countries and communities with the greatest need. Each packet contains rice, soy protein and other vitamins and minerals and yields six small meals.
  1. Intensifying food production activities in rural areas. Beneficiary households will receive improved seeds, training in cultivation, pest management techniques, and improved post-harvest storage, with a goal of increasing food production by 20%.
