06/21/2007 - Tennessee teacher Tom Rand closes in on finish line of 2007 Hunger Ride, hoping to inspire others to make a difference "one at a time"
Tom Rand, fourth-grade teacher at Presbyterian Day School in Memphis, Tennessee and Food for
the Hungry Advocate, completed his 1,800 mile, 22-day journey from Vancouver to Imperial
Beach on Friday, June 22. Also riding with Tom Rand on the Hunger Ride was Stephen Douglas,
a 2007 graduate of Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, who was inspired by the 2006
Hunger Ride and decided to join Rand this year.
Rand decided in 2006 to start the Hunger Ride in order to raise awareness and resources for the
children and families wracked with HIV/AIDS in Zeway, Ethiopia. He has been to Ethiopia
twice, most recently in 2005, where he witnessed first-hand the devastating circumstances of the
children and families he is helping.
"People die one at a time, and we can help one person, one community, one village at a
time," says Rand. "Through the Hunger Ride, I'm hoping to make people aware that they can
make a difference."
