Week 1 - Government Leaders
>>Pray that Alan Gabriel Ludwig Garcia Perez exerts wisdom in governing the country.
Peru is rife with poverty and has suffered in recent decades from terrorist groups that have killed tens of thousands. Maoist rebels claimed as many as 69,000 lives in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite the virtual destruction of the Shining Path and Tupac Amaru guerrilla groups, violence, in the form of murders, armed robberies and gang warfare, is still a problem, and Peru has yet to succeed in curtailing coca production. Pray that Toledo and his government employ godly wisdom in dealing with these severe problems.

>>Pray for the judges and magistrates in Peru.
The justice system of Peru has suffered from corruption during the past 15 years. Pray that God would allow honest people to sit as judges and restore faith in the country’s justice system.

Week 2 - Churches
>>Thank God for the growth of the evangelical church in Peru.
From a mere 0.8 percent of the population in 1960, evangelicals constituted 8.7 percent of all Peruvians in 2000, numbering about 2.2 million. The greatest growth occurred during the darkest days of violence and social deterioration, from 1980 to 1994. The growth has come at significant cost, however, as brave martyrs, some 750 evangelical leaders, were killed by both terrorists and the army in areas wracked by fighting over the cultivation of drugs. Other leaders were imprisoned on trumped-up charges.

>>Thank God for the growth of the church among indigenous peoples.
The church among the Quechua people, who with the Aymara are descendants of the ancient Incas, has grown rapidly as Scriptures, structures, worship and music have become indigenized. Whole villages have turned to Christ. The Amerindians of the lowlands have responded to missionary preaching—indeed, the three lowland provinces of the upper Amazon have the highest percentage of evangelical believers in the country. Pray that God would protect these new believers and, through His grace, add to their number.

>>Pray for Catholics.
This historic church is in a crisis in Peru. Over 80 percent of its clergy are foreign. The church is polarized between traditionalists and those espousing the pseudo-Marxism called liberation theology. Charismatics and indigenous movements and sects have also chipped away at the Catholic base. Only 15 percent of titular Catholics attend church regularly; the vast majority of nominal Catholics incorporate pagan beliefs into their theology. Pray that these people hear true biblical Christianity, and that the Holy Spirit work through the Word to bring them to the light and liberty of the true gospel.

>>Pray for wisdom for church leaders.

>>Pray that churches work together for the greater good of their communities.

Week 3 - Families
>>Pray for students.
Christian students live in an environment rife with disillusionment and frustration, and need encouragement to stand out for Jesus. The nearly 720,000 students in this country include a lower proportion of evangelicals than any other major sector of the population.

>>Pray for the street children of Lima.
Poverty, war and social breakdown have caused many children to be exploited, abused and made to work long hours for virtually no wages. Pray that God would protect these children and improve their circumstances.

>>Pray for success in AIDS awareness education among young people.

Week 4 - Partners, Projects & People
>>Pray for success for Food for the Hungry’s health programs.
Pray that God would bless efforts to reduce preventable diseases, facilitate access to health services (sanitation, garbage disposal), encourage belief in God’s love and value for life and demonstrate this through corrective attitudes and actions toward self and others, and improving the beneficiaries’ knowledge about preventable diseases.

>>Pray that schools in agriculture communities may respond positively to the technical assistance we are offering in cultivating vegetable gardens.

>>Pray that God would bless Food for the Hungry’s attempts to strengthen family units in Peru.

>>Pray that local churches will strengthen and deepen their understanding of holistic ministry and their view of the Kingdom of God, and thus better serve their communities.
