Week 1 - Government Leaders >>Pray for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Elected in 2002, Lula, as he is popularly known, promised to strive to end hunger during his presidency. He also vowed to tackle corruption, improve education and alleviate the country’s significant economic woes. Pray that God would be with him, and that His hand would guide his actions - for the rest of his term. The next election takes place October 2010; pray that God would have His hand over that in picking a wise and upright person to lead this country.
>>Pray that elected leaders rule honestly, and that they deal fairly with the people. Brazil is said to be paradise for some, purgatory for others, and for the lowest 20 percent, hell. Pray that discrimination and other injustices—including endemic corruption and cronyism—be stopped and that leaders attempt to right the wrongs of the past.
Week 2 - Churches >>Thank God for the growth of the evangelical church. Uncertainty of any kind—in this case economic—opens people’s hearts to God’s saving message, and this has happened in Brazil. The spiritual hunger attendant to the country’s economic woes has opened the door for the evangelical church, which is growing in influence and numbers, and now accounts for about 13 percent of the population.
>>Thank God that Brazil has become a major missionary-sending country.
>>Pray for the Catholic Church. Catholics in Brazil constitute almost 10 percent of all the Catholics in the world, and it is dominant in South America’s most populous country. However, only 13 percent of Brazilian Catholics are active in their commitment to the church. The remainder fall to nominalism and spiritism. Pray that the truths of the Bible would live in Catholic hearts.
>>Pray for the deliverance of Brazilians from spiritism. The world’s largest Catholic country is also the world’s largest spiritist country. This ministry of Satan appeals to about 5 percent of the population. Pray that God would raise up Christians to deliver Brazilians from the emotional appeal and false healings of this counterfeit faith.
Week 3 - Families >>Pray for families in the notorious favelas. Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have abject slums on their outskirts called favelas, home to from 20 to 25 percent of these cities’ populations. Pray that the saving and merciful truths of God’s Word would invade these slums and bring the residents to saving faith. Pray also for the families, especially believers’ families, in these hotbeds of violent crime, drugs, prostitution and disease.
>>Pray for the children of Brazil. Brazil is filled with kids, and these kids are in crisis. Ten million of them make their living on the streets. Hundreds of thousands are homeless. Half a million deal in prostitution. More than half a million have AIDS. Pray for the many churches and church agencies that direct ministry toward children and young people, and remember these hurting kids before the Lord.
Week 4 - Partners, Projects & People >>Pray for opportunities for Food for the Hungry to serve Brazil. Pray that God would open doors for Food for the Hungry and allow us to expand our work in this large country.
>>Pray for the Itapeva Ministry, a project that is for destitute communities in Itapeva. Pray that the health program would be successful and that model young local leaders would grow within the community.
