Food for the Hungry Responds to Bangladesh Crisis: Updated
Cyclone Sidr swept across the low-lying edges of southern Bangladesh on November 15. According to the latest reports, the death toll has reached more than 3,000 and millions of others are left homeless.
Following an assessment of damage and needs in areas hard hit by Cyclone Sidr, Food for the Hungry has put in place an aid response to assist many of the families who fled their homes at the height of the storm’s fury. The first steps of relief distribution are complete and our staff is preparing for another busy week. FH has distributed more than 2,000 family feeding packs which provide basic food supplies for a week to the people living where the cyclone first hit. So far, about $40,000 worth of supplies have been distributed or are in the logistics pipeline.
"Our focus is on immediate food and blanket distribution," says John Marsden, Food for the Hungry country director in Bangladesh. "Our assessment team reported major devastation in areas where they visited. Many people have no food, and their homes and belongings have been washed away and destroyed. They need immediate help."
