Food for the Hungry staff in Bangladesh have been working around the clock providing food aid and more to families devastated by cyclone Sidr.
Since November 15, when the cyclone hit land, FH has distributed food and non-food items to over 5000 families. Within the next few weeks the number of families will rise to over 15,000. The food packs include rice, lentils, soy bean oil, salt and oral saline as well as a blanket. This has been accomplished in partnership with MAP International and CRWRC.
Salehuddin, the Bangladesh Relief Coordinator reports,
"Our relief teams travel distances of 4-5 hours by motorcycle or boat
each day in order to reach the most remote coastal areas damaged by the
cyclone. They are finding that nearly half the people they meet have
completely lost their homes and are now living in makeshift shelters."
"Assessment and survey teams work ahead of those distributing relief to
make sure we locate the poorest and most vulnerable. Our FH staff are
building a strong reputation with local officials because we work
effectively to help those who are most in need."
As time passes and the initial shock dissipates, reality will set in that they have lost their home, livelihood as well as friends and family. FH has developed good relationships with both community members and donors on the ground, hoping to be able to provide long term assistance in rebuilding their lives.
