The recent presidential election in Kenya sparked
nation-wide violence.
Kenya was once
considered one of the most stable and economically wealthy countries in Africa, and the world is concerned about this violence
and the impact it could have on its less stable neighbors. An estimated 250,000 people have been displaced
as families have tried to escape the violence and an estimated 500 have been killed.
Many are afraid to go to work or open up stores and have
created a standstill in daily life.
Those who rely on day to day earnings for survival no longer have a
source of livelihood and those who do have means may not have places to shop
and acquire other necessary items. The
slums have become especially dangerous due to riots, church burnings, and the
shear number of people and the desperation among them.
FH has been working with a number of other faith-based
organizations in Kenya
in an ad hoc group called the National Alliance of Churches to respond to humanitarian needs,
especially in the slums. The first
response has been to make sure people have access to food, water, shelter, and
medical supplies. Food distributions
have been made in Kibera, the largest slum in Nairobi.
FH and the National Alliance of Churches were able to provide food and
necessary supplies to over 12,000 in the Nairobi
slums.
FH has also coordinated with MAF to move needed supplies
from Nairobi to western Kenya. Many of the roads have been blocked or are
too dangerous to pass through, and planes are the only way to reach many areas
of the country.
Continue to pray for the Kenyans as they continue to discuss
a peaceful and timely process to end the violence and come to a resolution
regarding the election. Pray that people
will be able to return to their homes and live peacefully with their neighbors,
regardless of race. Also, please
continue to pray for the families of those who have been killed as they wrestle
with grief and forgiveness.
