In 1988, Food for the Hungry (FH) provided relief supplies to communities recovering from 13 years of civil war and an AIDS pandemic. In 2001, Food for the Hungry started emergency relief work in South Sudan. Since that time, the country has gone through many changes, including establishing its independence on July 9, 2011. The war torn country is working to rebuild its communities and markets. FH is working with communities to increase farming, income, education and water access.
In 1994, it was estimated that 800,000 people were killed during the Rwandan Genocide. With 20 percent of the population murdered, Rwandan communities struggled in mourning and confusion. Food for the Hungry (FH) started working in the Philippines in 1978 to help Vietnamese refugees fleeing from the Vietnam War. Today, FH works in Filipino communities to improve conditions for children in church, school and at home.
Food for the Hungry (FH) began working in Peru in 1982 in Chiclayo, Trujillo, Lima and Arequipa. Due to terrorism, FH left those areas and started working in Pucallpa doing clean water programs and sponsoring a school for handicapped children. Today, FH works in 31 communities in three regions (Lima, Pucallpa and Chincha). One of Peru’s most successful programs is the Family Action Program that addresses prevention of family violence. In 1972, Food for the Hungry started working in Nicaragua in response to a devastating earthquake. In 1994, FH started long-term development work with the poor in multiple areas. Since 1987, Food for the Hungry (FH) has worked in Mozambique to help the poor. From 1997 to 2007, in the Sofala province, FH focused on agriculture, savings groups, health and other areas. One of FH’s more successful programs was using care groups to teach mothers healthy practices, like breastfeeding and treating malaria, to help newborns survive. In some communities, this decreased child mortality by 62 percent. FH also teaches about HIV/AIDS prevention and how to care for those living with HIV/AIDS. In 1976, Food for the Hungry (FH) provided emergency relief supplies to Kenya in the Marsabit district. In 2011, Kenya and four other countries experienced the worst drought in 60 years. Through livestock programs, the poor were able to sell their livestock to earn $2.2 million during the drought. This helped communities survive during the food crisis and water shortage. In 1971, as Food for the Hungry became an official organization, Haiti was one of the first countries FH helped during an emergency response. In the early 2000s, FH began an HIV/AIDS prevention and care program in Port-au-Prince. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck and killed approximately 230,000 people. Food for the Hungry (FH) started working in Guatemala in 1976 after an earthquake killed more than 22,000 people and left 1 million without homes. Since then, Guatemala has faced many natural disasters and economic challenges. FH is working to keep children in school and building healthy communities. In 1984, Food for the Hungry (FH) began working in Ethiopia in response to a famine. Up to the present day, Ethiopia is a country challenged by harsh environmental factors and droughts. In 1979, Food for the Hungry (FH) provided relief assistance to survivors of Hurricane David and Tropical Storm Federico in the Dominican Republic. Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo)
Food for the Hungry (FH) started working in DR Congo in 1995 to assist unaccompanied refugee children. Since the early 1990s, civil war has ravaged DR Congo. During the war, many women were raped as a strategic war tactic. Thousands of kidnapped children served as soldiers, making up 47 percent of the deaths from war. In 1990, Food for the Hungry provided relief aid to people living in Cambodian refugee camps during the civil war. In 1993, FH started partnering with poor communities in southern Cambodia to improve living conditions. Presently, FH works in northern Cambodia.
