Giving Through FH Matching Program Answer Prayers
No matter how complicated our needs, God provides – sometimes dramatically, and often working through the compassion of others.
Olivia lives in Guatemala and was pregnant with her fifth daughter when her husband abandoned the family. He’d been physically abusive during their marriage and didn’t prioritize providing for Olivia and their girls. But when he left, the family’s already difficult situation became much more critical.
Nowhere to Turn
The mother of four – and soon to be five – had nowhere to turn. Olivia had no siblings or parents who could help. “I simply could not provide for my daughters. It was hopeless,” she recalls.
A lack of nutritious food meant the girls weren’t growing as they should. They were malnourished and underweight. Olivia wasn’t able to find even a poor-paying job, and prenatal care was not available at any price.
“I could do nothing but cry out to God, so that is what I did,” Olivia says, adding that she knows God heard her cry.
An Answer to Prayer
Olivia was grateful when Food for the Hungry (FH) came to her community, offering exactly what she needed in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). That help was made possible through FH’s Multiply Your Donation giving opportunity.
Generous donor organizations such as USAID provide FH with grants that help parents like Olivia rise out of poverty by providing food, clean water, irrigation, education, and more. For every dollar our supporters give through Multiply Your Donation, our worldwide grants multiply their contributions 22 times on average.
As a result, FH Guatemala staff was able to offer Olivia and her girls physical, emotional, and spiritual support, including:
- Lentils and fortified food to provide nutritious meals for the family, and Nutributter vitamin paste for the baby
- Training to prevent malnutrition and family violence
- Chickens and the training Olivia needed to successfully care for them. Their eggs now provide adequate protein for the family, and Olivia is able to sell the chicks, giving her a reliable, ongoing source of income.
Hope for what lies ahead
Olivia now looks toward the future with hope and strength.
“Before FH came, we felt alone, as if we could die and nobody would care,” she remembers.
But today, Olivia, her daughters, and her neighbors know that they are not alone. Others care about them, and God answers prayer and supplies what they need.
