“I feel like that someone from far away is watching over me.”

- Moises, FH Sponsored Child reading his sponsor’s message

What should I write about?

Focus on sharing positive messages to encourage your sponsored child.

Some ideas you could write about:

  • Introduce your family
  • Describe where you live
  • What does a typical day look like for you?
  • Encourage your sponsored child to try hard in schoo
  • Tell them God loves them, and you care about them too
  • Ask a few questions. What would you like to know?
Can I send photos?

Yes! Just as you love seeing photos of your sponsored child, they will love receiving a photo of you.

Please make sure that the clothing worn in the photo is extremely modest (no tank tops, tight clothes, low-cut shirts, short skirts, or shorts). Also, please refrain from showing pets in your photo. Dogs, pigs, and other animals are considered unclean in many cultures.

Lastly, if you are sending by mail, please write your sponsored child’s id# on the back.

Can I send gifts?

You can send paper-based gifts, such as a sticker sheet, bookmark, postcard, photo, or coloring sheet.

e are only able to send paper-based gifts, so please do not send other gifts like cash, candy, food, or clothing, as these items are unaccepted.

Read more about our full gift policy here.

How long will it take to receive a message back?

When you write a message to your sponsored child, you should expect to receive a response from him or her in approximately 90 days. At certain times of the year (most notably Christmas), it can take slightly longer.

What should not be included in letters?

For the safety of your sponsored child and your family, please do not include any of the following in your messages:

  • Your home address or other identifying information such as an email address or phone number.
  • Food, money, toys, school supplies, or personal care items.
  • Photos that show your pets, since dogs, pigs, and other animals are considered unclean in many other cultures.
  • Also, please do not include any inappropriate topics, such as topics of sexuality, political views, or medical advice. Examples of other topics that are not appropriate include asking about personal contact information, expressing an atheistic worldview, or sharing too much about personal possessions or wealth. FH reviews all messages and will screen out any information that should not be sent to sponsored children.

Writing to Children in Sensitive Communities

Sponsored children in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and parts of Ethiopia, live in what we call sensitive communities. In sensitive communities, the culture or laws make traditional evangelism ineffective, illegal, or even dangerous.

If you sponsor a child in a sensitive community, please share about God and your faith in general terms rather than using the words “Jesus,” “Christ,” “Holy Spirit,” “Bible,” etc. In this way, you’ll be caring for your sponsored child, respecting the child’s unique culture and allowing FH leaders to use your words as an entry point for sharing the gospel in culturally appropriate ways.

Gift Policy:
You may send small, flat paper-based items that can fit into a standard #10 size envelope, have a value of less than $5 dollars and weigh less than 4 ounces. We ask that you send small, flat items of this size because shipping is expensive and even small gift items can cause issues clearing customs.

You can send postcards or photographs, however, we ask that you visit here for more details about culturally appropriate guidelines for photos and other images. Please write the child’s ID # on the back of each item that you enclose with your letter to ensure that it reaches him/her.

Best gifts to send your sponsored child:
  • Paper dolls
  • Postcards
  • Pictures of yourself or family
  • Sports cards, individual cards (baseball, soccer, football)
  • Stickers (flat, paper-based, only a few at a time)
  • Paper-based simple bookmarks, stationery, drawing, or writing paper (single sheets)
  • Coloring pages (single sheets, not books)

Please do NOT send:
  • Monetary gifts
  • Liquids, candy, or food
  • Batteries or magnets

Please note, all items should be compliant with airline transport and safety regulations. Gifts that don’t meet the gift policy will be donated to a local Christian non-profit organization in Phoenix, Arizona, that works with low-income families. We will not be able to return them.
